Mud Pots
Mud Pots is a field of gas vents near Niland in Imperial County, around four miles out of town and more than two hundred feet below sea level. The temperature on file sits near body heat. What comes up is mud and gas, and the reason people drive out is to watch it bubble. Nothing in the record names the land owner or says whether access is allowed, so treat this as a roadside curiosity with an open question attached.
Davis Road runs close by, a fifth of a mile at most. This is flat, low ground. The climate is desert dry, a few inches of rain across an average year and no snow at all. Summer heat out here is serious. The record says nothing about shade or facilities, and no campground appears anywhere close.
Go in the cool months. December through February is what the file lists, and with no snow to worry about the only thing keeping you away is summer heat. Neither an owner nor a fee is on record, so check current access before you set out, and stay off soft ground near the vents.
Aircraft with laser scanners measured this ground to within inches. The scan strips out trees and buildings, leaving the bare shape of the land around Mud Pots.

Heat flow measures the warmth working its way up through the ground from deep inside the earth. Where it runs high, rain and snowmelt that seep down through cracks in the rock come back up hot.
