Hot Springs Near Morzhovoi
The orange dot marks the spring, in a frame about three quarters of a mile wide.
Hot springs near Morzhovoi sit at sea level on the Alaska Peninsula National Wildlife Refuge, and the water runs 145 degrees, past the scalding line. Access is restricted. The approach is a hike of a bit over four miles from a Second World War jeep trail, the only road the record names. Akutan, the closest town listed, is a hundred-plus miles away.
Refuge ground under the Fish and Wildlife Service, Aleutians East Borough. From the old jeep trail the approach is on foot; what the ground between is like is not on file. Snow totals around seven feet in a year. Average temperature low forties, close to four feet of precipitation.
Restricted; ask the Alaska Peninsula refuge before going. January heads the list of best months on file, with February and March following. Above the scalding line; keep out of the source. Neither campground nor fee is on record. Nothing on file describes the jeep trail's condition.
